I signed up to a gym in March to begin strength training and have consistently attended on average, about 2-3 times a week which is more than I ever have. The first month was probably the most difficult for me because of ‘shocking’ changes to my diet, schedule, and body. It’s hard to eat healthy, workout after gym when you’re dead tired, and be literally sore for a week after every workout. It took a bit of time for my muscles to adjust. I haven’t started to wake up early yet to exercise as my body seems to be needing more sleep than ever nowadays.
Unfortunately, I’ve been plagued with injuries — all in which I admit is my fault. I lost the entire month of June due to a back injury. I’ve lost about two weeks in July due to a knee injury. Both of which were caused by overtraining. And I have and probably always will have periodic pains shooting in my wrist and elbows due to carpal tunnel (especially when doing dips or bench presses). I’m a bit more cautious now, taking baby steps and listening to what my body is telling me.
I’ve done zero swimming, cycling, or running during this time and have only started to cycle and run this week. So, my first day starting benchmarks are:
Swimming: none, still haven’t found a swim facility.
Cycling: 26 miles in 2 hours
Running: 3 miles, 10:05/mile pace
Obviously, I’ve got my work cut out for me but am stronger, more motivated, and energetic as ever.
